No graphics? B-o-r-ing! Have you watched a video of a presenter talking (and nothing else) for 3-5 straight minutes? It’s boring, huh? Not even close… more like sleep-inducing – complete with snoring.

Graphics – including photos, icons, text and animation – work to keep viewers engaged.

Well placed and relevant graphics can make all the difference in your video and the engagement it engenders. There are endless graphic options from which to choose.

How will you make the right choice of icon/graphic so they best serve your video?

Photos and Icons

Drop graphics and icons on-screen as soon the related topic is referenced by the presenter.

Simple icons go a long way in communicating an idea or point, and actual photos can be useful too.

However, limit your use of stock photos. Too many stock photos will push the “cheese factor” way up, if you’re not careful. Keep the photos relevant. (No puppy or kitten photos in business videos, please.)

Use text to emphasize points

On-screen text emphasizes specific points or information.

Text reinforces what’s being said, and directs the viewer’s attention to a particular point or topic.

Keep it simple. Use a single word or short sentences for emphasis. When the presenter explains multiple points, use text with bullets to keep viewers engaged. If it’s a sequential list, then use numbers, or letters to keep viewers involved in the process.

Use Animation

When using graphics and text in your video, be creative.

Use simple animations, like fades or slides.

This makes each graphic/icon more interesting. Don’t go overboard with the animations. Stick to simple and subtle.
